Zetamale - Live at Gate City Noise

I found out about this show from the Lovitt website. Zetamale had Darron and Ash from FOUR HUNDRED YEARS and Cornbread from ENGINE DOWN (plus some other folks). I HAD TO GO AND I HAD TO RECORD IT.

Imagine my confusion when I saw a keyboard set up, and then when Darron sat down to play his guitar. Not what I was hoping for, but it ended up being.. pleasant. I kinda forgot about this until I was looking through my stuff recently. Upon listening to this 13(!) years later, I'm done holding my grudge and it's.. still pleasant.

Reminds me a bit of Jeremy Enigk's solo stuff mixed in with some of those Denali grooves. I couldn't find much about them except that they had a demo CD and then a few years later changed their name to Delegate and recorded a full length. Not the most search friendly name, so I couldn't find anything else.

House On Fire - Live at Guilford College

Anyone who followed No Idea bands, from Gainesville in particular, might be stoked to hear this. After Panthro U.K. United 13, Alex Ulloa started House On Fire. Personally, I think this was his pinnacle. If you don't have the CDEP they self-released, find it.

Guilford Underground in Greensboro, NC,  was a cafe at the college that would have shows, most notably known for having Refused play there. My friend's band, The Skorts (an acoustic duo with Rich of Twelve Hour Turn and his girlfriend), were on tour and I originally went to see them. I was pleasantly surprised to see House On Fire was playing too, and luckily I had brought my recorder.

A couple of these songs turned into Black Cougar Shock Unit songs, and one seems to be entirely lost in the ether.

Smog - Live at Gate City Noise

Gate City Noise was a fantastic record store in the late 90's-mid 2000's in Greensboro, NC. They had a great run of putting on free shows for touring bands coming through the area. I saw Kylesa (which was insanely loud), Party of Helicopters, Carissa's Weird, and a few others.. including this show.

This was basically my introduction to Bill Callahan/Smog. I remember he was wearing one of those 80's professor's corduroy sports coats with the elbow patches.. indie guys, amirite?
